Curriculum:

Instruction is provided by current Jesuit or Jesuit trained teachers.  Students are assigned a counselor for the duration of the program.  Student/Counselor ratio averages 8:1.

Problem Solving - Mathematics: Critical thinking skills used in mathematics are often an area of concern.  With the A-Plus experience, each student works in a cooperative learning environment, where each member of the group contributes.  Individuals develop problem solving skills through the use of critical evaluation, examination, trial & error, and other creative approaches. Math games are used to develop these skills in challenging the student to explore new avenues to attack word problems and other complex tasks.  The students will review the strategies for continued growth in math concepts.

Reading and Test Taking Skills :  The design of this course is to teach students how to study more efficiently and effectively.  Reading is crucial for success.  Each student will be shown specific steps that will allow them to improve comprehension and retention and to improve academic success.  In addition, test taking strategies are reviewed in this course.

Grammar and Study Skills Review: This course reviews parts of speech and grammar. Essential skills necessary for a strong English foundation and preparation for Foreign Language study. Students will also review study skills and preparation. Use of SQ3R and other study strategies will be presented.

Music Appreciation: The goal of this course is to provide students with a wide span of musical information, improving both their knowledge and skill. Listening examples will explore many different styles, from Beethoven to the Beatles and beyond. Beginning Music Theory will cover note names, rhythm, and dynamics. Students are provided with a Recorder, a real instrument, and taught to play songs as a group and individually. Hopefully, the students will be inspired to continue with music in high school.
